 Master’s Program: 24 credits from Major courses, 6 credits from Thesis Research courses 

  * Taking Research Paper Writing course is not mandatory, but recommended. 

  * Master’s student major in Classical Literature must take at least 1  Modern Literature course. Master’s student major in Modern Literature must take at least 1 Classical Literature course.  

 Doctoral Program: 36 credits from Major courses, 12 courses from Thesis Research courses 

Credit Limit per Semester: up to 12 credits

GPA Requirements: 3.0 or higher

2. Credit Recognition between Undergraduate-Master's/ Master's-Doctoral Course

• Master’s student can’t take undergraduate course

   * However, if a foreign master’s student  submits ‘Course Registration Approval Form’ after consultation with his/her Academic Advisor and gets approval from Department Chair, he/she can take undergraduate Major courses up to 6 credits per semester.

• Doctoral Student can’t take master’s course 

   * However, if a doctoral student submits ‘Course Registration Approval Form’ after consultation with his/her Academic Advisor and gets approval from Department Chair, he/she can take master’s courses up to 6 credits per semester.

• Graduate courses taken during undergraduate program can be recognized as master’s program credits up to 6 credits. Doctoral/combined master’s& doctoral courses taken during master’s program can be recognized as doctoral credits up to 12 credits. 

   * However, if the credits were already calculated in required credits for graduation or completion, the credit recognition is not allowed.

   * Students must submit ‘Credit Recognition Approval Form’ at the beginning of the semester(Spring: April, Fall: Septemeber). 

3. Credit Recognition for Other Department's Coureses

• Master’s student can take other department’s courses up to 3 credits, doctoral student up to 6 credits. 

• Those who want to take other department’s courses more than above credits must submit ‘Course Registration Approval Form’ after consultation with his/her Academic Advisor and get approval from Department Chair.

4. Coursework Completion Postponement

• Those who want to maintain coursework student status after fulfilling completion requirements, must submit ‘Coursework Completion Postponement Approval Form’ before the end of the semester.

• Once the completion is postponed, the student must register at least 1 credit for the next semester . Postponement withdrawal is not allowed.

Graduation

1. Qualification for Thesis Submission
(1) Foreign Language Test

• Those who have resgistered for more than 1 semester can apply for the Foreign Language Test.

Domestic(Korean) Student must pass tests in 2 subjects [①English, ②2nd Foreign Language]

Foreign Student must pass tests in 2 subjects [①Korean Language, ②English or 2nd Foreign Language]

   – Foreign student whose mother tongue is English only needs to pass Korean Language Test. 

   – English test is replaced with the TEPS or TOEFL iBT score. 

     * TEPS score must be 327 or higher. TOEFL score must be 96 or higher(86 or higher for stduents entering 2022 or before).

     * Students must submit TEPS/TOEFL score report to the Department Office to qualify Thesis Submission. 

   – There are 7 languages in 2nd Foreign Language Subject. Students can choose one of these languages and take the test.

     * 7 languages are German/French/Chinese/Russian/Spanish/Classical Chinese/Japanese.

     * It is not allowed to choose his/her own mother tongue.(However, it is allowed for Chinese students to take Classical Chinese Test)

     * 2nd Foreign Language Test can be replaced with SNULT Reading Part score(Master’s: 60 or higher/ Doctoral: 70 or higher) 

(2) Major Subject Test

• Those who have resgistered for more than 2 semesters and have acquired more than 12 credits can apply for the Major Subject Test.

• Major Subject Test can differ according to Major(Linguistics/Classical Literature/Modern literature). For more information, please contact Department Office.

(3) Prerequisite for Doctoral Thesis Presentation

• Domestic Student: At least 3 research papers must be published in Academic Journal, and one of them must be published in KCI Journal or KCI Candidate Journal.

  – One of the three can be co-authored(less than 3) paper. 

• Foreign Student: At least 1 research paper must be published in Academic Journal(whether KCI Journal or not doesn’t matter.)

• According to Major(Linguistics/Classical Literature/Modern Literature) requirements can be different in detail. For more information, please contact Department Office. 

2. Thesis Examination

• Those who complete coursework and qualify for thesis submission can apply for thesis examinaiton.

•  According to Major(Linguistics/Classical Literature/Modern Literature) thesis examinaiton procdure can be different in detail. For more information, please contact Department Office. 

3. Thesis Submission Deadline/Deadline Extension/Withdrawal etc.

• Master’s student must submit thesis until 4 years(=8 semester) after completion. Doctoral student must submit thesis until 6 years(=12 semester) after completion. If a student fails to meet this deadline, he/she must submit ‘Thesis Submission Deadline Extension Approval Form’. If it is approved, the student can earn another 2 years(=4 semester) from the original deadline.

• Those who fail to meet the 2 years of extended deadline can get another 3 years(=6 semesters) to submit thesis. This is the last chance for thesis submission, and no more extension is allowed.  For this, a student must submit ‘Deadline Expired Research Student Application Form’ and register to take courses(Doctoral: at least 9 credits/ Master’s: at least 6 credits). In case of doctoral Deadline Expired Research Student, he/she must register at least 2 semesters. 

• Doctoral degree thesis examination can be postponed to next semester. In this case, the student is automatically registered for thesis examination  in the next semester and doesn’t need to pay examination fee again.

• Master’s degree thesis examination can not be postponed. If a Master’s student wants to withdraw thesis examination, he/she can submit ‘Thesis Withdrawal Form’. In this case, the student must start thesis examination procedure from scratch in the next semester, and pay examination fee again.
