through the study of Korean language and literature.
The Department of Korean Language and Literature aims to creatively inherit and develop Korean culture through the study of Korean language and literature. To this end, we uncover the structure and history of the Korean language, understand the literature of past and present eras in the context of their spirit and social background, and explore their values. Since the life of Korean people is conducted through Korean language, and the traces, spirit, and fragrance of that life are contained in Korean literary works, it can be said that the studies of Korean language and literature is the core of Korean humanities.
The bachelor’s program provides a foundation for introducing students to the three main areas: Korean linguistics, classical literature, and modern literature, which is a much-needed basis for further development and expansion for students who wish to pursue other fields. In addition to attending lectures, students can also join various autonomous student organizations or societies to broaden their interests and cultivate a broader education. In these activities, students can share their thoughts and experiences with others, discuss them, refine their basic attitudes toward life, cultivate their humanistic aptitudes, and explore various career paths, including professional studies after graduation. In addition, these activities can make university life, which can sometimes be isolating and lonely, a vibrant and rewarding life for young intellectuals.
After graduation, students enter the workforce or go on to graduate school. In the case of employment, students have traditionally entered the fields of newspaper and broadcasting (journalists, producers, and broadcasters), education (middle and high school teachers), the literary world (novelists, poets, and critics), advertising (copywriters), and finance (banks and securities companies), and nowadays they are also active in the field of information and communication such as the Internet and multimedia. Some students go on to graduate school and get a job after earning a master’s degree, but most go on to pursue a doctoral program. Alumni who have earned doctoral degrees teach at universities across the country or work in research institutes related to Korean language and literature. In any field, they will support and lead the 21st century with the understanding and love of humanity, the power of imagination, creation, and dreams, and the sense of justice that they have gained through the practice of Korean language and literature.
